Apparently Leonardo Da Vinci and Michaelangelo hated each other. Well, actually, people say it was more that Michaelangelo hated Leonardo...I guess Michaelangelo is well known for being a pain in the ass...ANYWAY....He and Leonardo were both commissioned in the early 1500's to each do a fresco on opposite walls inside the Palazzo Vecchio, which is Florence's town hall kind of building in the Piazza Signoria. Apparently Leonardo painted a magnificent fresco, but had experimented with oil paints. Oil paint and frescos don't mix, and the colors wouldn't dry on the wall. So, the fresco was destroyed. For other reasons Michaelangelo's fresco was never finished either. The two were always competing with each other and arguing over whether or not painting was the most important art form or if it was sculpture (so far this is all truth, not legend).
It is said that one day they were arguing over who was more talented and Michaelangelo claimed he was such a good sculptor that he could scupt Leonardo's portrait with his hands behind his back.
This Etching is hidden on the outside wall of the Palazzo Vecchio, and art historians have confirmed that it matches Michaelangelo's technique....who's to say for sure. But it's a good story.
