I told my Mom yesterday that she was the oracle, and she kind of laughed it off. But the truth is that I really do think she is. I've said before that I thought my Mom was, "perfect". She always laughs when we remember this, because she doesn't view herself this way. She thinks of the little things she views as flaws and shrugs it off. But I don't mean perfect like she does everything perfectly- For instance, I know that if she doesn't write it down, she has a limit of 3 things that she can remember to get at the grocery store. She loses her glasses all the time which has led to her glasses randomly popping up everywhere, which I guess is good because you start out with no glasses and then you have 20 pairs hidden around your house....Kind of like a weird Easter egg hunt or something. She has an undaunted optimism that can sometimes make you think you want to snap her out of it, like Cher in "Moonstruck", and when I go to her house, she tries to give me all of the food from her refrigerator. But those things are not flaws- they are tidbits of your character, and if you've noticed, they actually show that even in her "flaws", she is an incredible person. But when I say she's the oracle, I am not even referring to that kind of stuff.
I can say, with absolutely no doubt or question in my mind, that I have never heard my mother say something that she didn't mean. In fact, one time when I was in high school she said something to me that wasn't particularly flattering (I was asking for it)...I remember my first reaction was shock that I had provoked her enough to get her to say it (I think she said I was acting like a baby or something, nothing terrible), and the shock immediately turned into frustration because I knew that if she said it, then it was true, and it's tough to argue with the truth- although, my other side of the gene pool probably caused me to promptly do so anyway.
This may seem like a small thing- never saying something you don't mean- but when I think back over my life, I have definitely done so many times already. Even if it was something that I felt and regretted saying to the person, that counts.
And besides that, there is just something about my Mother. She is so pure of heart, selfless, and thoughtful-- but she can be just as tough if she has to be. She is also the most nurturing person I have ever met.
My Grandmother's nurse once asked my Mother what doll store they picked her up from- which I think sums it up well. From what I've heard, my Mom has always been this way.
So anyway, to the point....
Yesterday was my mom's birthday. I was about to broadcast which birthday it was exactly, but I think she's heard the number enough for now- and I guess the number is really irrelevant anyway, right?
We had a really fun time yesterday. We started out with hot dogs for lunch from our favorite little hot dog "restaurant" in town. Then, we went to see that movie, "Young At Heart", which was so cute. The last part of the day consisted of going to a nice restaurant, where my mom ordered one of everything off the dessert menu- for dinner. It was awesome, the waitress looked at me and said, "I've never had anyone do that before." I had a feeling the fun of it kind of rubbed off on her as well. So, she brought out my food and Bill's food, and then big plates covered with desserts for Mom. My favorite part of the day was just watching Mom with all of those desserts, she was like a little kid in a candy store- I could tell that it was one of those things that will make a mark on my memory. Besides, I knew she wouldn't be able to eat 5 desserts...and I had the good fortune of having an extra spoon....
